She's a vegan, shuns showbiz parties preferring to study her craft. Alison Lohman is showing you don't need to be tabloid fodder to be a leading lady.

Alison Lohman came to prominence playing troubled teenage girls, now her latest role pitches her into a full-on adult world of sex, drugs and faded celebrities.

Appearing with long service medal winners Kevin Bacon and Colin Firth in Where the Truth Lies is a 24-year-old actress already hailed as America's Best and Brightest by Esquire magazine. Alison Lohman, not to be confused with the tabloids’ favourite ‘too skinny’ target Lindsey Lohman, plays the lead female protagonist in the murky tale of a celebrity duo disgraced by the murder of a young fan. Lohman is the headstrong journalist Karen O’Connor who hopes to uncover the mystery surrounding the episode that ruined the comedy duo’s career. Following her successful portrayal of troubled teenage girls, most notably in White Oleander (2002) and Matchstick Men in (2003), O’Connor is the meatier role that Lohman has spoken of wanting in various interviews.

Despite protesting that acting is just something fun to do that she happens to get paid for, from many reports the young actress has shown a very serious attitude towards her career. As an eight year-old in Calif, Palm Springs she persuaded her mother to allow her to audition for a community theatre production of the Sound of Music. From there she continued taking part in community theatre, and at the age of 14 on a visit to cousins in upstate New York she got her first break. During the visit she sang, and a friend of the family thought she was so good, he recommended a Los Angeles manager to her.

When she graduated from high school in 1997, she turned down the chance to study musical theatre at New York University to take community college classes near L.A. while attending auditions. As well as asking the advice of the more experienced actors and directors she was working with, Lohman says she educated herself on the acting craft through books. “I learned it just by reading books,” she says in a previous interview. “I picked up Stanislavski's Method and started reading it and became like obsessed with it.”

Her dedication is paying off with an accolade, among many, from the influential industry trade conference ShoWest, which named her Star of the Future at its awards. She has just completed a Michael Mayer film, Flicka, and is currently filming Delirious with Steve Buscemi and Michael Pitt in New York.

Lohman, who is a recent convert to veganism and is said to be a fan of all things holistic health, is known in Hollywood circles as a very grounded individual. Unlike the other party-loving Lohman, she is not to be found hanging out with the Paris Hilton crew having recently admitted that she finds showbiz functions “forced”. Indeed, her first taste of the limelight at the Canadian premiere of White Oleander caused her more stress than happiness. “I remember they had me in a limo,” Lohman said in an interview, “and I freaked out, tears rolling down my cheek and having to get out of the limo and just walk there because I couldn't deal with the limo and the premiere and the dress. It was too much.”

Lohman, who earned her Screen Actors Guild card with a part in the independent film 13th Floor, is hopefully far calmer about the media attention. And if she isn’t, than now would be a good time to become accepting of it considering that actors such as a Sam Rockwell are calling her a star. “Alison is a movie star, first off,” he said following the filming of Matchstick Men, in which he co-stared. “She's just great to look at and then, on top of that, she's just an incredible actress. She's got these monster, 40-year-old, veteran actor chops.”

With approval from peers and critics alike, Lohman may indeed fulfil ShoWest’s prediction.
