After nabbing Pfeiffer for the role of Ingrid, the obsessive poet who, in a jealous rage, kills her boyfriend
with poison extracted from oleander flowers, director Kosminsky (Wuthering Heights) saw more than 300 candidates
before choosing 21-year-old Lohman to play her teenage daughter, Astrid. After all, when Ingrid is sent to
prison, it is Astrid we follow through a string of foster homes (including Wright Penn's and Zellweger's),
watching her discover an inner strength as she forms a trusting relationship with a fellow foster child
(Almost Famous's Patrick Fugit).
Despite being surrounded by Oscar-caliber talent, Lohman didn't have much time to pump her costars. "It's not
like Alison got to know Michelle," she says. "When we communicated, it was more as Ingrid and Astrid."
A former documentary filmmaker, Kosminksy says he was compelled to bring the Oprah's Book Club pick to
the screen because of its grittiness. The toughest scene by far is a mother-daughter confrontation that
was filmed at Pitches Detention Center in Castaic, California, shot in one day (instead of two) to up
the intensity. "In that scene Astrid is drained and worked up with nerves and just trying to keep it together,"
Lohman says. "And that's the way I felt, too. I thought I was going to throw up."
Junket Bond: Pfeiffer did give Lohman some insight into one of her least favorite parts of the job. "She told me,
'The acting is fun. The publicity is what you get paid to do.' "
