From SciFiWire: Alison Lohman, who co-stars in the futuristic action movie Gamer, told reporters that the finished film is grounded in reality despite its sci-fi high concept. Directed by Crank’s Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, the film stars Gerard Butler as a real-life avatar in a video game in which players control actual people in real combat.

“Actually, I think it’s a little bit different than the Crank movies that they did,” Lohman said in a group interview Monday in Beverly Hills, Calif., where she was promoting Drag Me to Hell. “It’s maybe more serious. It’s kind of a serious action movie, in a way. It’s like this could happen. It’s more real, what’s happening, even though it is in the future.”

Lohman’s role did not involve her in any intense physical work or tricky camerawork. “No, because I had a smaller part, and I didn’t do any of my stunts on the movie,” she said. “I play Trace. She’s part of the resistance. I try to get Gerard Butler back to his family. It’s this dystopian future where humans are playing humans on a global scale through video games.”

Her description of the film’s future world was simple. “It’s not a pretty world,” she said. “It’s chaotic. Everything’s debaucherous.”

Lohman added that she was impressed by what she saw. “It turned out better than I expected, to be honest,” she said. “I read the script, and a lot of the time, reading the scripts, it doesn’t even give an idea of the tone of the movie or a lot of the other different aspects. So when the director gets involved, they have such their own take on it, and both Mark and Brian are very strong. So they do their own thing, and it’s great.”
